(overview)
A first of its kind full-fledged live recorded outdoor stage production created during one of the darkest eras in theater production. Adhering to socially distant COVID safety precautions to protect both the viewers and the players, the play was performed in a vacant parking lot in a quiet residential neighborhood in South Central L.A. at the intersection of Slauson Ave and Avalon to be observed by an audience in their cars, drive-in style. Audience members had clear visibility from the safety of their vehicles with audio from mic’d up actors being broadcast through a predetermined radio station—With the help of projection screens and Go Pro cameras strategically placed throughout performer vehicles and lot, you received a bird-on-a-wire glimpse at the action unfolding in different locations of the narrative. It created an exciting immersive tapestry of individual moments that congeal into one, which forced you to discipline your line of sight to follow the action. At its beating heart, 5711 Avalon was a love letter to the frontline essential workers who were ordinary people upon which extraordinary superhero status was foisted, many of whom are the Black and Latinx folks who COVID disproportionately impacted. As an assistant production manager, I delegated tasks, organized production teams, and liaised with creative and senior figures working on the project. I Provided senior producers with progress reports during filming and organized solutions to unexpected problems or delays during production, such as script changes, equipment rentals, props supervision, and talent coordination.
